Blackberry vs iPhone at Reading Uni
My second segment on RU:ON TV News. Starts around 5.20.
Remember the Milk, My New GTD App
Over the last few years I’ve been using Omnifocus as my go to app for task organisation. Omnifocus is the swiss army knife of GTD apps but the lack of cloud synchronisation has finally made me start searching for an alternative.
Remember the Milk is an online GTD app that I used for the first time a few years ago but put down in favor of the better featured Omnifocus mainly because of it’s iPhone app. Having started using services like Evernote that sync with the cloud I have been looking for the same from my GTD app rather than having to actively sync my to do list between my iPhone and my Mac so I’ve returned to Remember the Milk with a wholly positive experience.
Why Remember the Milk
So if your not already using Remember the Milk here are my top five reasons to get on board and organise your life.
- Cloud based Sync - For me this is the biggest selling point of all wherever you input data it always automatically syncs to the cloud meaning that wherever I am, on whatever machine I can quickly and easily get to all my to do data.
- Online Interface – This point really carries on from the last. Having your to do lists availableĀ in a web app means that no matter what computer I use I can access it without having to download any software etc.
- Locations - Location is the new big thing admittedly but being able to tag all you to do’s with the location they need to be completed is so powerful. If you use remember the milk on a gps enabled device like an iPhone you can then search for all tasks needed to be done close by, great for things like shopping or visiting people.
- Search – Carrying on with Evernote link being able to search just saves so much time. You never have to remember where you wrote your to do’s or what folders you placed things in just type and hit search.
- Reminders – One more thing I really love about Remember the Milk is reminders. All GTD apps have them but with Remember the Milk you can set it to email, text or IM you when a task is due or any information to do with that task. You can also set multiple reminders just to make sure you don’t forget.
Don’t get me wrong a lot of these things you can also do with Omnifocus and it’s a great product but for those of you who have a more mobile life check out Remember the Milk.
*You can now sync Omnifocus using WebDav however this is a lot more complicated than Remember the Milk*
Oli Gibson iPhone App
Hi Everyone, this is just a quick post to let you all know that my new iPhone app is now available in the app store! If you want one tool to let you keep up with my blog and everything else I’m up to the iPhone app is for you.
You can view my blog, my twitter stream and all my youtube videos right there on your phone and it’s all live updating. So please check it out here. Also if you like the app I’d really appriciate it if you could write a review on the iTunes store.
Lastly thanks to all of you for supporting me and reading the blog, it means so much that you take the time to see what I have to say!
What’s on your iPhone
I’m excited today, the doctor tells me I’m much better, I haven’t got anything serious and I don’t feel like death warmed up anymore! I also managed to get the road bike fixed today and even went out round the block, man I miss riding, need to work on getting my bike up to join me in Reading before the winter closes in.
I downloaded Tweetie 2 for my iPhone last night and it made it to the front page and this got me thinking, what apps do you have on your iPhone’s. I have a bit of an app addiction so I thought I’d go through some of the apps I use more than everyday and hopefully get some suggestions on some I should have from someone out there too.
So along the top I have my messages, my ical, photo’s and camera. All the standard apps but all useful especially ical, I use that so many times a day.
Following that I have Google Maps which is amazing for searching the area for shops, banks, restaurants of almost anything else. The GPS has saved me a few times and with the 3gs knowing what way I’m facing getting lost is almost impossible. I then have my clock for alarms, settings and then Google search which I use for the voice searching when on the go.
After this is WordPress, I use this to update my blog on the go, it’s great for writing text posts but adding images is a nightmare. Then I have Evernote, this is my note taking app. I can write anything in here and file it away knowing I only have to search to bring it back and I use it online too. Evernote is my backup memory and the way it can index words in pictures is amazing. Omnifocus takes the prize for my most expensive app. However it is the most amazing to do list you will ever see, infinitely expandable it syncs with my mac and organizes my life. My favorite feature is it can tell you what tasks you have to do where you are by using the gps. This app is a life saver. Lastly on this line is the National Rail Enquires app, I love this app when traveling, it tells me when trains are coming and can find me a route from any station in the uk to another.
The last line comprises of Facebook, which really does what it says on the tin. Tweetie 2 which is defiantly the best twitter iPhone client. I love the local search and the easy to use interface. Flickr is an easy way to upload photo’s to my Flickr profile and you can search all of Flickr for images. Lastly Skype, this is a great app, when using wifi I can make Skype to Skype phone calls for free and it feels like I’m using my phone. Perfect if I’m running close to my monthly limit.
So there you go, there’s some of the apps I use on my iPhone. If you do look at this blog on a mobile phone you may notice I’ve tried to make it easier by designing a mobile browser so I hope you like that. If not it’s easy to go back to the normal site with a link at the bottam of the page.
I’m moving back to University tomorrow so I’ll hopefully write a short post then.
Ciao
